School Partners

The Jockey Club “Play n Gain” Project would be fully implemented in 14 local kindergartens over 3 academic years (six in the first year, ten by the second year and fourteen by the third year). Implemented in September of 2018, the project is expected to benefit more than two thousand participants, including children, parents, teachers and principals.

Play n Gain: Family and School Collaboration

“The Project would facilitate parents partner with teachers to create holistic learning experiences, and parents who become game trainers would be able to apply the skills at home and in community settings.  The Project provides teacher professional development so that play-based learning can be integrated into the daily curriculum.”

The teachers, parents and children from our kindergarten partners could always play and gain from the relaxing and experiential-learning of Play Education which leads to further precious experience gained.  Apart from making it easier for the children to accept and internalize rules, games could enhance the mentor (parent and teacher)-child-relationship and their mutual understanding too.  With less anger, more joy and sweet memories would come.  This would be a true practice of the spirit of “Play n Gain”.

Success Stories from the Teachers and Parents

The Principal Chan Chi Man of St Margaret Mary's Catholic Kindergarten said, “Children are born to love playing games so learning through relaxing ways could help them understand, retain and learn basic attitudes, skills and knowledge much more easily.”

Parent volunteer Ms Lee from St Margaret Mary's Catholic Kindergarten said she would not only lead games in schools, but also learn together with her son through playing at home.“We can play games like ‘Word Chain’ and ‘Telephone game’ in public transportation, which helps to improve concentration and listening.  Sometimes the games gain interests from other children too and the games help rekindle my heart as a child as well.”

Ms Liu, School Manager of St Rose of Lima's Kindergarten, pointed out that games could really incentivize the children to learn.  “There are children that don’t usually like recognizing words now finding the motivation to try to recognize the words.  Some of them become the leader in the game and we would give them little prizes to encourage them afterwards.” she said.  There are more than 10 parents becoming “parent trainer” and leading different games now after received training.  “(Play Education) could help the children to use their brains, enhance communication skills and handle their emotions independently.”

Mr Lau, who is also nicknamed as “Mr Tall”, a parent from St Rose of Lima's Kindergarten, said he used to handle the behavioural problems of his daughter by lecturing and scolding her to stop whenever she was running in the street.  But now Mr Lau uses games as a way to allow his daughter to learn through play, to further enhance the parent-child relationship.

Principal Lo Sau Fun of The Salvation Army Hing Yan Kindergarten, said the students tended to play alone (solitary play or parallel play) in the free play session provided previously.  Now after joining the Jockey Club “Play n Gain” Project, they know that with proper interventions like increased visual stimulations and spacing, that “these simulations would lead to collaboration among students facilitating each other’s creativity, to create some new ways to play and enhance communication.”

(Nickname) “Ms M&M”, a parent from The Church of Christ in China Cheung Chau Church Kam Kong Kindergarten, learned the importance of positive reinforcement in the moment.  “Children would remember after being praised, so they would continue their positive behaviours, even becoming excellent.  They would evolve from only being aware of themselves, to knowing how to appreciate other classmates and becoming able to point out specifically what is worth being praised about the others at the end.”4

(Nickname) “Ms Small”, a parent from The Church of Christ in China Cheung Chau Church Kam Kong Kindergarten, thinks the greatest benefit of the Project is (for the children) follow and act instantly (「一聲就聽」).  “When you are speaking to your child but he does not seem to listen, all you have to do is to wait for a little while.  Contrary to what he shows, he has actually heard you; and he will respond naturally. This way, the parent-child relationship will become much better with less anger.”
